From Our Founder: A Girls Chips Origin Story 🌱

September 10, 2025

And “why is the restaurant called girlsgirlsgirls Burritos”??!!

As a more behind-the-scenes type person, I’ve always liked to let my food do the talking. But as Girls Chips hits shelves (and your snack drawers) across the country, I wanted to say hello, introduce myself, give you insight into my girls world, and share a little bit about why this all matters to me.

My name is Sara Wood, and I’m the founder and owner-operator of girlsgirlsgirls Burritos and Girls Chips. I opened my restaurant back in 2016, working out of a tiny bar kitchen with a takeout window and a bike delivery service. What started as a fun, delicious idea that developed in my home kitchen quickly grew into a full restaurant, a bar, and a stage for live music here in the heart of beautiful Lexington, Kentucky.

We still serve the original menu — and yes, these are the exact same chips we’ve made from day one.

And now, Girls Chips are finally available in a bag.

Sooo why is it called girlsgirlsgirls?

People ask me this all the time with curiosity, with humor, sometimes with confusion. And I get it, it’s a wild name. But here’s what’s up with that 🙂

It’s not about exclusion. It’s about empowerment. And it’s about having ✨fun✨ with the process.

I named the restaurant girlsgirlsgirls as a celebration of the girls — and women — who do it all. Who cook, who bike, who build, who run businesses, kitchens, and families. Who work hard, lift each other up, and deserve to be celebrated.

As a woman leading a team that runs a restaurant, a food truck, live events, and now a snack brand, it’s a top priority for us that we support women and girls through everything we do – internally and externally. And we back that up with action. For years we’ve partnered with organizations like Girls on the Run, AVOL Kentucky, and Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Program, and I’m so so proud to sponsor collegiate women athletes through NIL deals. When we say we believe in girls, we mean it not just as a demographic, but as a force.

And when we say “girls,” we mean the girl in all of us — the part that’s creative, curious, fun, still growing, still learning, and wants something joyful and delicious from the world. We’re not saying “only girls allowed.” We’re saying supporting girls makes the world better for everyone.

So no — you don’t have to be a girl to work here. You don’t have to be a girl to eat here. You just have to believe that food should be good, and people should be treated well.

That’s what Girls Chips stands for.

And now about those chips!

Girls Chips started in my home kitchen. And I still use all my original recipes and spice blends today. Our chips are hand-cut from hearty, Kentucky-made white corn tortillas, prepared fresh, and tossed in our signature Girl Spice — a house-made blend of real, high-quality spices.

They’ve always been one of the most-loved parts of the menu. Customers would say, “These are too good not to be in a bag.” So I listened.

Launching Girls Chips as a retail product was a leap. I don’t have a background in CPG or manufacturing. I didn’t have investors or a giant team. But I had something better: a product people already loved, a local community that believes in girls and our mission, and a dedicated, talented crew helping make it all happen.

And I’ll be honest — I’m a shy guy! I typically avoid the spotlight. I’m not a social media type. I like simple privacy. But I believe deeply in connecting with people through food. I believe in celebrating what we make, what we share, and what brings joy to the table. And I want to be part of that conversation with you — even if it’s just through the chips in your snack bowl!

Girls Chips is proudly 100% woman-owned and operated, made here in Kentucky, and powered by a small team that cares about flavor, quality, and connection. Our original corn tortilla chips are vegan, gluten-free, Kentucky Proud, and always crafted with love.

And while we’re growing — into new stores, new cities, and new hands — we’re keeping the same spirit we started with: a good sense of community, celebration, and humor with big flavor.

Whether you’re here for the taste, the spice, or the story, I’m so grateful you’re here! I hope Girls Chips makes its way to your table, your party, your lunchbox, your road trip, or your couch snack situation.
